7 tips to prepare your yard for a spring sale

Are you selling your home this spring and worried that you’ve let your yard go a bit wild and unattended this winter? The yard is often the first thing prospective buyers see when they arrive at an open for inspection. An overgrown tangle of weeds doesn’t present the best first impression, so grab your gardening gloves and get to work on preparing the outside of your home for a Spring sale.

Remove the winter

Rake up all the evidence of winter. Leaves, stray sticks, stones etc. are not appealing and maintaining a visibly clean yard can make the world of difference.

Weed

Weeds can be a pain to get rid of but it’s an essential part of maintaining your lawn and garden. Remember it’s often the little things that can make a big difference in your yard’s appeal. A weed-free yard will not only look healthier, but it will show you care about all aspects of your property.

Time for a trim

It’s important to regularly mow your lawn to ensure the grass is even and healthy. Remember to also do the edges to keep it neat and ensure the outside of your lawn doesn’t grow faster than the middle.

Keep it hydrated

Grass will become dry and a dull shade of green if it’s not watered regularly. If it’s been a dry winter then this step is essential, as grass and plants need regular hydration. Pay attention to areas that may be sheltered and therefore not receive as much moisture when it rains.

Plant seasonal plants and flowers

Look for plants that will be in bloom during your selling period. Broad leaf foliage plants are great for year round growth as they can withstand cold and hot temperatures and are very adaptable (make sure you keep them away from walkways as they can be very sharp).

Pruning

Trimming back any hedges, trees or large plants can make your house appear more inviting. Pruning your plants also encourages new growth so pruning a few weeks before your selling period should mean your plants are looking fresh and full by the first open for inspection.

Mulch

Once everything else is done, spread mulch around your garden beds. Mulch will help keep moisture in your plants, make your gardens easier to maintain during the sale period and give your yard a fresh finish. Be sure to use mulch that suits your garden type and style.
